Become a Big Brother or Big Sister
In order to become a Big Brother or Big Sister, you must meet the eligibility requirements below. If you are eligible and would like to volunteer, please fill out the questionnaire at the link above (on the Sioux Empire site). Upon receipt, the Mitchell office will contact you with more information.
Volunteer Eligibility Criteria
A volunteer for Big Brothers Big Sisters must:
- A volunteer must be a minimum of 16 years old
- Have a reliable means of transportation. If that means of transportation is an automobile, the volunteer must have a valid driver's license and minimum levels of insurance prescribed by state law and the agency's insurance carrier. The volunteer must provide Big Brothers Big Sisters with copies of their driver's license and car insurance.
- Make a commitment to have contact with the child for a minimum of 2 to 4 hours a month and for a minimum of one year. (1 -2 outing per month and phone calls)
- A Criminal Records Check and Department of Motor Vehicle Record check will be completed as part of the screening process and must not contain any information that indicates the volunteer would be unable to act as a positive role model to a child.
- The volunteer will complete an interview and home assessment with Big Brothers Big Sisters staff.
- The volunteer will provide the names, addresses and phone numbers of four references to Big Brothers Big Sisters staff.
- Demonstrate an interest in and ability to work with children.
- Demonstrate respect for the safety of children.
- Demonstrate mental and emotional stability.
- Have a home environment that is suitable to a child.
- Portray a healthy sexual attitude.
- Relate appropriately to the Big Brothers Big Sisters staff and agree to work within agency guidelines.
- A mentor's volunteer or employment experience with this or any other Big Brother Big Sister of America affiliate will be checked as a part of the mentor's background information.
Volunteers who are under 18 years old must also meet the following criteria:
- Be currently enrolled in a Mitchell School District public or private high school or surrounding area or have graduated from high school. Surrounding area is subject to staff review for approval.
- At least two of the volunteer's references must be school personnel such as a counselor, principal, teacher, coach or other personnel.
- Have an acceptable driving record.
- Obtain written permission from their parent/guardian to participate in the program.
