The Impact of Big Brothers Big Sisters

Impact on Youth

With the one-to-one mentoring that Big Brothers Big Sisters offers we can diminish these destructive behaviors, increase youth's self esteem, and end the cycles that are passed on from one generation to the next. By doing so, we will enhance the quality of life in the Mitchell area for years to come. The impact a mentor has in the lives of the youth:

  • 46% less likely to use illegal drugs
  • 27% less likely to begin using alcohol
  • 52% less likely to skip school
  • More confident in their schoolwork performance
  • Get along better with their families

Studies of resilient youth show that sustained relationships with adults in the community can help students thrive despite adverse conditions.

Long-Term Impact

Adults mentored as children through Big Brothers Big Sisters are more likely than peers who were not involved in the programs to have:

  • Four-year college degree
  • Incomes of $75,000 or greater
  • Strong relationships with their spouses, children, and friends

These statistics are from the Proprietary Research conducted by Harris Interactive 2009
