We’re heading into spring thinking of all the fun things that await us in summer! At Big Brothers Big Sisters, we’re always looking for ideas on how Bigs and Littles can take full advantage of summer around the Sioux Falls area.
Here are our top 10 summer events great for your next match date.
Downtown First Fridays & Block Parties - June 7, July 5, August 2, September 6
The first Friday of every month downtown Sioux Falls stays open later, hosts live musicians at several locations on Phillips Ave, and host a big block party at 8th and Railroad. Each month offers different themes, musicians, and store discounts and more. In May, SculptureWalk changes out for the year, so it’s a great time to see the new sculptures!
23rd Annual Festival of Cultures - June 8
Celebrate the wonderful diversity Sioux Falls holds! This free event is held at Falls Park and offers demonstrations, dancing, live music, and food to name a few. Parking is free but can be hard to find. Park downtown and ride the Sioux Falls Trolley for a small fee.
Great Plains Cheese and Ice Cream Festival - June 15
This one day event is held at Strawbale Winery just north of town. The new festival will include local cheeses and ice creams as well as family friendly games, bouncy houses, music, and so much more. Admission listed on website.
South Dakota Peach Festival - June 15-16
More food! Held at the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds, the 4th Annual Peach Festival celebrates its namesake. There will be music, games, inflatables, fun, food for purchase, and a Sunday car show. Admission is one non-perishable food item for Feeding South Dakota. May include additional charges once inside.
Kids’ Nite - June 25 & July 30
A central Sioux Falls favorite, McKennan Park offers two nights of free inflatables, carnival games, and Storyland Children’s Theatre. At this time, food is not listed, but many events at McKennan allow you to bring in your own picnic.
JazzFest - July 19-20
One of the biggest music festivals in the area! This family friendly event is held at Yankton Trail Park. There is music for all ages, food for purchase, and kids activities. Ride your bikes into the park from a neighboring park along the bike trail.
80th Annual Sioux Empire Fair - August 2-10
This week is full of carnival games, rides, food, animals, and music. With so much to do you can go multiple days! Enjoy live demonstrations, fresh new farm animal babies and more. Admission listed on website, rides and food are additional costs.
Outdoor University - August 3
Let your little try their hand at fishing, kayaking, shooting, crafts and other outdoor inspired activities. This free event is hosted by the Outdoor Campus and is packed full of educational but fun things for kids to do.
Sioux Falls Airshow - August 17-18
Explore aircrafts from around the nation perform air stunts! The family friendly event is free and located at the SD Air National Guard, located by the Sioux Falls Airport. Both days include static aircraft exhibits, kid zone, food for purchase, and more!
7th Annual RiverFest - August 17
Walk, bike, kayak, or ride down to the River Greenway in downtown. RiverFest hosts live music, kids activities, food for purchase, and a firework finale! The event is free to the public.
