Maybe you’ve been thinking about becoming a Big for a while now — you’ve heard about the Big Brothers Big Sisters program in the Sioux Empire, you’ve met some matches on our blog, and you’ve been meaning to register to mentor a child.
We get it. It’s easy to have the best of intentions . . . but then life gets so busy. We’ve all been there!
There’s a Chinese proverb that says “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” If you’d like to become a positive influence in the life of a local child, NOW is always the right time.
In fact, there may not be a better time to register to become a Big than Summer 2019! Here are ten reasons why.
Ever wondered what it's like to be a Little here with the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sioux Empire?
Sergio can tell you. He's been in the program for about a year now, and loves it. We asked him a few questions about his experience with BBSSE — and, more importantly, his relationship with his Big, Ashton.
Keep reading to find out what he said!

One year and a few months.

I wanted to find someone to play sports with.
What’s your favorite activity that you and your Big have done together? Why?
Going to Sky Zone. He likes to be competitive like me.
What’s an activity that you hope to do together in the future?
I'd like to go boating again.
What is your favorite thing about your Big?
He is a good listener and gives advice. He is fun to be with.
Why do you like having a Big/how has your Big made a difference in your life?
It is good to have someone who understands me and he has been in a tough spot like me before.
HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT ABOUT BECOMING A LITTLE (OR A BIG)?
Like Sergio said, one of the best things about the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sioux Empire program is just having fun!
If you've ever considered getting involved in Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sioux Empire, (as either a Big or by helping a child become a Little) please contact us. We'd love to pair you with the right Big or Little.

Every bit helps to ensure Littles like Sergio can have great relationships with their Bigs.
Just how much can being a Big impact your life?
For Reannae Tague, who has been a Big Sister for almost five years, the experience has been "the best thing that's happened to me."
But it's not just Reannae who has been impacted by the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. In fact, the reason she loves BBBS so much is because of the impact she's been able to have on her Little.
Read more about Reannae's experience with BBBS below!
Why did you want to become a Big?
I wanted to make an impact on a youth's life.
How often do you and your Little spend time together?
Two to four times a month.
What kinds of activities have you and your Little done together?
We've gone bowling, hiking, and fishing. We've been to Thunder Road, Sky Zone, Air Madness, the Outdoor Campus, the community center, and the arcade. My Little loves being outside and being active!
We take turns picking what to do. Normally, we grab something to snack on when we're finished and talk about life.
What's your favorite thing about your Little?
How much he has come out of his shell. He's doing great in school and played school basketball this year for the first time.
How has your Little changed or grown since being matched with you?
He has become more active, is playing fewer video games, and is spending more time outside with his friends. He loves helping others.
Would you encourage others to consider becoming a Big?
It's the best thing that's happened to me. I never thought my life could impact a young one's life like it has!
As Reannae Tague's experience shows, mentoring a child through BBBS is incredibly rewarding — not just for the Little, but also for the Big.
If you've ever considered becoming a Big, we encourage you to learn more about how you can get involved and make a difference in a child's life!
Ever wondered what it's like to be a Big here in Sioux Falls?
Rachel Case can tell you. As a volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sioux Empire (BBBSSE) for nearly six years, she's something of an expert on the topic.
We asked Rachel a few questions about her experience with BBBSSE — and, more importantly, her relationship with her Little. Hear what she had to say!
We’re heading into spring thinking of all the fun things that await us in summer! At Big Brothers Big Sisters, we’re always looking for ideas on how Bigs and Littles can take full advantage of summer around the Sioux Falls area.
Being a Big is incredibly rewarding - no doubt about that! Once you’ve gotten settled into a good routine with your Little, bonding is very fun and you have the opportunity to get to know a unique kid in your community! Good things are better when they’re shared, right?
Have you thought about sharing the Big life with your friends? Here’s how.
Set it Up Right
The first thing most people think when they hear, “become a mentor” is probably, “WAIT! I can’t be a mentor, I’m not a perfect person!” and the first thing you should probably tell your would-be-Big-bud is, “you don’t have to be perfect!”.
It’s important to emphasize that being a Big is about being a positive influence, not being a perfect influence.
Talk About How Easy It Is
The next “mental roadblock” that lots of potential Bigs run into is the question of, what will I do with my Little?
The easy answer, of course, is whatever you’d like! As you probably know, you don’t need to spend a ton of money to hang out with your Little. Emphasize the fact that you can find lots of ways to hang out with your Little that are both fun and low-cost!
Here are a few ideas to get you started on your “this is a lot easier than you’d think” conversation:
Lay it Out
We’re guessing that what they’ll say after you share everything above is, “what do I need to do to sign up?”
That part’s really easy.
All you need to do is point them to our online application, or share this page with them so they can have an idea of how easy it is to get all signed up! Then, we’ll take it from there.
You’ve heard about Big Brothers Big Sisters, and maybe even know someone who is involved in the program as a Big or Little. But have you ever considered getting involved yourself?
Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of the Sioux Empire is always looking for more mentors. Not sure what’s all involved with becoming a Big?
We’re explaining the application process, and giving you five reasons to become a Big this year!
